BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama A&M University junior women's cross country runner Laura Avila was selected the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
 
Avila recorded a fifth-place finish last weekend at the Michael Pretorious Invitational in helping the Bulldogs claim second place. She completed the race by logging a time of 19:13.41 to earn the fifth spot.
 
Florida A&M's Tara Bert was selected the SWAC's Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
 
Alabama A&M returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 as the Bulldogs compete at the Upstate Cross Country Invitational at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
