TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Alabama A&M University women's cross country team finished second with 50 points during Monday's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Cross Country Championship at the at the Apalachee Regional Park.
"I am just so proud of these young ladies and what they've accomplished," Alabama A&M head coach
Andrew Murphy said. "We had a good season and just missed the ultimate goal of winning the conference title. But second place is huge for our program and where we want to go."
Alabama A&M had four runners inside the top 20 and four total inside the top 20.
Laura Avila led the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 18:46.7, which was her second-fastest time of the season.
Sanyae Gibson was sixth in 19:04.09.
Brianna Samuels registered an eighth-place finish in 19:11.5 and Minka Isolm ran 19:35.0 to claim 13
th.
Nevaeh Carrizal was 23
rd, logging a time of 20:42.1. Kayla Flucker finished 46
th in 22:47.1
Alabama A&M garnered 50 points as the defending champions, Alabama State narrowly walked away with the title with 45 points. Texas Southern was third with 65 points, followed by Prairie View A&M (99 points), Southern (134 points), Jackson State (151 points), Bethune-Cookman (182 points), Alcorn State (208 points), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (208 points), Mississippi Valley State (274 points and Grambling State (286 points).
Texas Southern's Alvia Brown was the individual champion in 18:20.8.
Avila was selected to the All-SWAC First Team, while Gibson and Samuels earned Second-Team honors.
