A&M Falls to Kentucky

LEXINGTON – The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team could not overcome the 31 turnovers they were forced to commit as the #13 Wildcats of the University of Kentucky took a 84-58 decision Saturday afternoon..

“We tried stopping in transition and passing forward. It didn’t matter. They are a strong team, said head coach Altherius Warmley. They are stronger than us; they play with a lot more intensity than we did. We knew if we wanted to stay in the game we needed to do better.”

The Bulldogs (4-4) turned the ball over 18 times in the first half and shot six of 21 from the field for 29 percent.

“Defensively, Kentucky is a different team than Minnesota. Kentucky put the pressure on us earlier than Minnesota. After we didn’t handle the pressure like we normally do, we didn’t respond the way we needed to.”

Junior guard Whiquitta Tobar, who came in averaging 19 points, finished with 14 for the Lady Bulldogs. She was just 2 of 12 from the field.

“Tobar got frustrated early. She had seven turnovers at the half and that’s not typical of her. She is one who has an overall theme of being able to score from inside to outside, and get her teammates the ball,” Warmley stated. “When she wasn’t able to do that early, I think that put a stop in her game. A lot of times your team goes as their leader goes. With her struggling early, it put more pressure on our freshmen who are still learning this level. I didn’t think we got contributions from our post players like we needed to.”

The Maroon and White did shoot 13 of 32 in the second half for 41%. Sophomore center NaDra Robertson posted 13 points and five rebounds in the first of three contest versus Southeastern Conference opponents.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is a trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a date with the University of Alabama on Monday, December 20, at 11:30 a.m.
