Lady Bulldogs Start Strong Against UAH

HUNTSVILLE -- The Lady Bulldogs tennis team opened the 2012 season with a solid showing against cross-town rival UAH. The ladies of A&M pulled out a 5-4 win at the Huntsville Athletic Club this past Saturday.

In doubles action, the Lady Bulldogs played with a measure of desire in winning #1 and #2 doubles, 8-1 and 8-1. UAH pulled out the #3 doubles but by then the Lady Bulldogs were ahead 2-1 going into singles competition.

The Maroon & White started singles strong and seemed to be in control as wins at #2 and #3 position developed. Senior Jasmine Cherry, playing #4 singles, was the final win of the night for Alabama A&M as the ladies were able to win three of the first four matches on the court. The senior Cherry was joined in the winning column by younger sister Denise and Morgen Shaw.

“I think we did some good things in doubles,” commented Lady Bulldogs head coach Thomas Colvin. “We have spent a lot of time to strengthen that part of our team and I think it paid off. We’ve got to work a bit more on playing a complete match.”

A&M will next face the Lady Tigers of Auburn University at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala., on January 29th. The match is set for 10 a.m.
