Candid Conversation With Tobar

Coming from the Arkansas Delta this young woman didn’t know that playing basketball and academics could take her far.

WhiquittaTobar was on the hardwood of an AAU team when former A&M women’s assistant coach Dexter Holt saw a talent like no other that caught his eye.

What made this young woman come to A&M?
“Coach Warmley’s graduation rate of 99 percent,”said Tobar.

She had other offers to other schools, but chose Alabama A&M University.

“When I arrived on “The Hill” my goal was to become a principal,” Tobar mentioned. “I doubled majored in political
science and education."

Coming to college you have so many academics opportunities, so from principal, Tobar changed her mind to study
law.

The Blytheville, Arkansas native was accepted to Georgetown, Emory, Alabama, Michigan State, Minnesota and Indiana School of Law at the end of her collegiate career.

“I’m concentrating on corporate law.” Tobar mentioned.

The 2011-2012 SWAC Player of the Year was a member of the Pre-Law Club, AAMU Democrats, and Honor Society.
“I’m just a member; I have too many things going on with basketball and academics to hold an office.”

Athletically, she has shined and improved each season. Tobar talks about her journey from freshman year to now.

“Freshman year I was just happy to step on the court,” jokes Tobar, “I really didn’t see much playing time but I knew my opportunity would come.”

During her sophomore year Tobar learned from Katrice Williams and improved her game.

After her junior season, the future lawyer was selected from a group of 250 applicants to participate in the
Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad for study in Africa for five weeks during the summer.

“It was the excitement of being among many people interested in American education, and the excitement of traveling to Africa,” Tobar said.

Tobar’s goal was to become Player of the Year in the 2010-2011 season.

“I was hurt that I wasn’t selected but I know that I will have to work harder, going into my senior year.”

During Tobar’s final offseason she was selected from a group of 5000 applicants to participate in the New York University School of Law, Harvard Law School, and the Advantage Testing Foundation Trails for five weeks during the summer of 2011.

Opening up the 2011-2012 era, Tobar was a force on the court. She led the league in scoring (19.8) for the second year in a row and in free throw percentage (81.4). Tobar was third in minutes (33.9), sixth in assists (2.8), seventh in rebounding (6.1), ninth in steals (1.8), 10th in field goal percentage (39.6) and 15th in blocks (0.5). She finished in the top 10 in seven statistical categories in leading the Lady Bulldogs to the third seed in the SWAC basketball tournament.

Her hard work paid off when she received a call at the end of the regular season.

“First I was shocked, overwhelmed, and speechless; I had to make sure that I heard those words again.”

Over the phone, the 5-7 senior heard these words, “Congratulations SWAC Player of the Year!”

Off the court, the recent honors graduate will attend law school at Georgetown University on a full scholarship in Washington, D.C.
