Alabama A&M 2021-22 Season in Review: Bulldogs Athletics

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With the close of the 2021-22 campaign, the Alabama A&M Sports Information Office produced a Season in Review for each of the program's 16 sports from the past year.
 
That series began with the fall season before progressing to the winter and spring campaigns. Each week reviews were released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 18.
 
Today we take a look back at the entire 2021-22 season for Bulldog Athletics.

Notables
FOOTBALL: Returned to Louis Crews Stadium for first time in 651 days, defeating South Carolina State 42-41 in front of 12,300 and knocked off Bethune-Cookman 30-27 in a driving rain storm in game aired on ESPNU. Safety Trenell Troutman sealed both with interceptions in closing minutes. I Closed season with four straight wins, averaging 47 points per game. Stretch began with 42-28 victory over Alabama State (10/30) in the Magic City Classic and included a 52-49 come-from-behind win at Texas Southern (11/13) and a 52-24 whitewashing of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11/20) I The 52 points against UAPB marks the 11th time since moving to DI in 1998 that the program has hit the 50-point threshold, including back-to-back games for the first time since 2003 I A&M was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Offensive Staff of the Year and offensive coordinator Duane Taylor was named OC for the American team in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. This followed scoring at least 30 points in eight of 10 games I Aqeel Glass finished his career with 12,136 yards and 109 passing touchdowns to place in the Top-15 all-time at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. Those numbers placed him fourth all-time among HBCU quarterbacks, trailing NFL legend Steve McNair (Alcorn State), Bruce Eugene (Grambling) and Willie Totten (Mississippi Valley State)  I Glass finished with 3,568 yards passing, 36 passing touchdowns, went 259-of-414 with an average of 356.8 yards per game and finished with a passer rating of 160.27 in 10 games and starts to repeat as the Deacon Jones Award Winner as the Black College Football Player of the Year and SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. Latter made him just the fourth multi-time winner in past 23 years I Glass also repeated as BOXTOROW National Player of the Year, finished 9-of-25 in the Walter Payton Award voting (FCS Heisman) and was the Phil Steele SWAC Player of the Year. Was also a Stats Perform FCS Third-Team All-American and three-time SWAC Offensive Player of the Week I Earned four BOXTOROW All-Americans (First-Team: Aqeel Glass, Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim, Odieu Hilaire, Honorable Mention: Gary Quarles) and three BOXTOROW Preseason All-American honors (Aqeel Glass, Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim, Jonathan Williams) I Glass recorded five games with at least 400 air yards, including resetting the program's NCAA Division I Era record twice with 446 and four touchdowns at Grambling (10/2) and 462 with five scores at Texas Southern (11/13) I Gary Quarles led the SWAC in yards per game (95.5) and rushing touchdowns (10) and was third in yards (955), accomplishing that in just 10 games I Ibrahim delivered his second career 1,000-yard season, finishing with 1,008 and finishing the year as one of just 16 individuals to accomplish the feat at the FCS level. Finished 15th in the country, do so in just 10 games while every other player in front of him played at least 11 games I Dee Anderson exploded onto the scene with 12 touchdowns and 493 yards on just 33 catches in his one year as a Bulldog.
 
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Sabria Wooten placed 12-of-72 in a time of 19:47.47 at the 2021 SWAC Championships (10/18). Aneisha Ingram notched 14th spot stopping the clock at 20:01.39 to help lead the Bulldogs to a 6-of 12 overall finish I Wooten had a stellar performance at the Montevallo Falcon Classic (9/17), finishing 13-of-77 in a time of 21:09.70 and Ingram came in three spots behind, crossing the line in 21:43.10.
 
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Picked to finish first in the 2021 SWAC Preseason Poll I Delivered a 3-1 victory against Grambling (10/9) on the first day of the SWAC Eastern Cluster then earned a 3-2 decision over Texas Southern on the final day, delivering that with a thrilling 16-14 final set I Played matches against power house SEC member Ole Miss (9/17), PAC-12 team California (8/27) and Big Ten member Northwestern (8/28) I Against Mississippi Valley State sophomore setter Isis Mitchell (Plano, Texas) ignited the offense with 48 assists and 22 digs while senior defensive specialist Maci Battle (Meridianville, Ala.) came away with 19 digs in a 3-2 victory.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Earned SWAC Co-Champions after 8-1-0 league record, marking the sixth regular season title in program history and the first time since 2012. Delivered a seven game win streak that tied for the second longest in team history and produced a program-best nine shutouts I Advanced to SWAC semifinals for the first time since November 7, 2008 after delivering a 1-0 victory over Southern (11/5) I Broke a 15-year-old program record with nine shutouts after delivering a 1-0 victory over Southern I Senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) was named Preseason and Postseason Goalkeeper of the Year, becoming the first Bulldog to do so as she led the SWAC with nine shutouts, including five straight clean sheets from October 22 - November 4 I Junior forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) was named to the All-SWAC First-Team after leading AAMU with 10 goals and 23 points, both ranked her second in the league I Head coach Emanuel Stephens was named SWAC Coach of the Year as he led Alabama A&M women's soccer to 10-8-1 overall record and 8-1-0 league mark that also earned them a share of the 2021 SWAC Regular Season Championship I Arielle Fortune made history for the program, becoming the first women's soccer player to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team on November 11. Fortune was the only individual to be named from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) from the 601 total selections from NCAA Division I, II, III Men's and Women's Soccer Academic All-District Teams I Taylor Stokes (Katy, Texas) was one of 20 student-athletes representing 15 colleges and nine different sports to be chosen for the Women's Sports Foundation and NBC Sports Group mentoring program.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Delivered a second-place finish in the SWAC for just the second time, officially, in the program's NCAA Division I history. Posted 13-5 mark in league play to accomplish that feat for the first time since 2004-05 (the 2011-12 team did so as well but those records have been vacated by the NCAA). The 13 wins in SWAC action also marked a program record I Produced NCAA Division I Era record seven-game win streak from February 12 through March 5, capping the run with a 73-67 double overtime victory against Southern on Senior Day. Also included a 76-68 win over rival Alabama State (2/26) that ensured the tie-breaker in the standings and a 55-51 nailbiter over Grambling (3/3) I As a unit, led the SWAC in fewest points allowed per game (62.6), this in a season that saw non-conference competition against the likes of powerhouses such as Dayton, Cincinnati and Nebraska – all on the road. Destroyed Samford (72-47 on Dec. 9) and knocked off Florida Atlantic (65-63 on Dec. 20) in road non-conference play I Dariauna Lewis became just the second individual in Alabama A&M history to repeat as a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America. She earned Second-Team honors, joining football's Tracy Kendall (First-Team in 1989-90 and 1990-91). She is only the fifth individual in the history of Bulldog Athletics to be named an Academic All-America and one of just two multi-time Academic All-District honorees in A&M history I Lewis also became the first player in program history to earn a third BOXTOROW All-American honor – all First-Team. She played in all 29 games, starting 28 and posting averages of 15.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, 1.1 assists and nearly a steal per game. She also shot .500 from the field (167-of-334) and .724 (105-of-145) at the foul line I Made team history with multiple All-SWAC selections for the third straight season, accomplishing the feat for the first time in program history.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Tied program NCAA Division I Era record with a six-game win streak from February 12 through March 3, capping that stretch with a 71-63 victory over Grambling (3/3). Also included an 80-65 victory over rival Alabama State (2/26) while also defeating Florida A&M (2/21) by a 71-63 decision I Advanced to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2014 and went against No. 1 seed Alcorn State, falling by a narrow 69-64 score I As a unit, had the third best defense in the SWAC only allowing 67.0 points, this in a season that saw non-conference play against Cincinnati, Troy, Alabama-Birmingham, Samford and Indiana State – all on the road I Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala) became the first player in the history of Alabama A&M to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team. Hicks and Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) were both named to the NABC All-District Team.
 
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Returned to SWAC Indoor Championships (2/17-18) for first time since 2018 I Junior Brandon McLaren (Clifton, Hanover, Jamaica) delivered impressive campaign, placing 3-of-20 in the 60-meter hurdles (8.41) at East Tennessee State's Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational before notching pair of impressive outings at Bulldog Open. Placed 5-of-45 in the long jump (6.89m) and 11-of-42 in 60-meter hurdles (8.49) before coming in 3-of-24 in long jump (7.07m) and 10-of-24 in 60-meter hurdles (8.46) at SWAC Championships I Junior Kyle Graham (Mobile, Ala.) got consistently better in the 400-meters all season long, beginning with a 13-of-67 finish with a time of 51.24 at ETSU. He lowered that to 51.13 the following meet (Bulldog Open), finishing 31-of-73, before dropping it all the way to 50.35 at the SWAC Championships. That time had him in the top half of the field with a 15-of-30 outing.
 
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Competed in four meets during the season with the distance medley relay delivereing a strong performance at the 2022 SWAC Championships, finishing fifth in a time of 13:10.47 I Junior Aneisha Ingram (Frankfield, Jamaica) delivered a strong outing at the SWAC Championships, placing 7-of-22 in the 800-meters with a time of 2:20.17 before teaming up with freshman De'Ajene Johnson (Detroit, Mich.), senior Shanique Masters (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and freshman Taylor Wingo for a fifth place finish in the distance medley I Graduate Jairyn Russell (Birmingham, Ala.) delivered strong performances all season long, starting at the Samford Open with a 13-of-59 finish in the 60-meters (8:09). She would then place 22-of-76 in a time of 7.90 at the Buccaneer Invitational.
 
BOWLING: Competed in 10 meets during the season that included at least 12 nationally ranked teams I Finished 11-of-15 at the Valpo Bowling Classic (10/29), notching a pinfall total of 10,326 in 50 games I Junior Montaya Walton (Detroit, Mich.) delivered an impressive season as she became the first bowler to earn All-SWAC honors since 2015. She was named to the All-SWAC Second-Team after leading the Bulldogs with a 9-of-55 finish that included a pinfall average of 194.14 and a high of 224 at the East Regional Bowling Championship I One of Walton's best performances came at the Columbia 300 Music City Bowling Classic (3/20) that consisted of the first 15 nationally ranked teams. She finished 83-of-203 with a pinfall average of 184.60 and a high of 225.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Opened the season at 5-1 in SWAC play, defeating Southern (2/18), Grambling (2/19), Bethune-Cookman (2/20), Mississippi Valley State (3/10) and Alcorn State (3/13) I Defeated Tennessee State (4/10) 7-0 in non-conference play and also faced in-state foes Auburn, UAB, North Alabama, Jacksonville State and Troy I Senior Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) delivered in the classroom, earning a prestigious Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship as a result of her STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) work. She is one of approximately 300 individuals to be so honored and will work with the Naval Oceanographic Office – Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Mississippi I Juniors Neha Ghare (Pune, India) and Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) each earned All-SWAC Second-Team honors. Ghare earned hers at the No. 5 spot (7-2 at that position, 8-8 overall, 4-9 in doubles) while Ruiz Diaz did so at No. 4 (6-2 at No. 4, 8-7 overall). Ruiz Diaz was a perfect 5-0 in singles in SWAC play while Ghare was 5-1 I Earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team four fourth straight year and had senior India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), juniors Ximena Duarte Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), Neha Ghare (Pune, India) and Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) as well freshman Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) earn Scholar-Athlete recognition.
 
MEN'S TENNIS: Defeated OVC member Tennessee State (4/10) 5-2 while also facing No. 18 Middle Tennessee, SEC powerhouse Auburn, Samford, North Alabama, Jacksonville State and Troy in non-conference action I Entered the SWAC Tournament as the No.4 seed and reached the semifinals with a 4-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State I Senior Natiphat Mulada (Korat, Thailand) became just the second SWAC Player of the Year in the program's NCAA Division I history. He was also named to the All-SWAC First-Team for his performance I Freshman Matis Torres Ramis (Mallorca, Spain) earned a position on the All-SWAC Second-Team with a 6-6 overall record while going 4-0 in the league I Earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for fourth consecutive season and had seniors Rodrigo Arana Rios (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico), Mulada and German Ruiz Crespo (Mollina, Spain) and freshmen Freddie Lawrence and Vence Ntcha earn Scholar-Athlete honors.
 
MEN'S GOLF: Selected as one of just 10 NCAA Division I teams to play in prestigious PGA Works Collegiate Championship I Sophomore Felipe Gomez Lopez (Bogota, Columbia) and senior Jason Johnson (Toledo, Ohio) represented Bulldogs in all 11 tournaments I Gomez Lopez led the team with a 76.29 stroke average, playing all 28 rounds and registering 2,136 strokes I
Freshman BK Kim (Won Ju, South Korea) finished second on the club with a 77.64 stroke average after firing 1,941 strokes in 25 rounds I Kim notched three Top-10 finishes, all in his final four tournaments, including the program's first All-SWAC honor in eight years. Shot 77-73-73-223 to tie for 8-of-29 at SWAC Championships.
 
MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Competed in six meets during season, returning to SWAC Indoor Championships for first time since 2018, delivering impressive individual performances I Produced 8-of-23 finish at Margaret Simmons Invitational (3/26), finishing with 38 points over the two-day meet at Murray State I Junior Brandon McLaren (Clifton, Hanover, Jamaica) delivered nine top five finishes in 14 events across six meets. Produced impressive outing at Margaret Simmons Invitational, winning the javelin over 23 other competitors with a mark of 57.99-meters and was 2-of-32 in the long jump at 6.99-meters. Both were season-highs at the time and also placed 12-of-32 in discus with season-best 40.60-meters I McLaren added long jump victory (6.92m) ahead of 29 others and was 3-of-16 in javelin (56.70m) at Hilltopper Relays (4/2) I Was 2-of-8 in javelin (55.51m) at Music City Challenge (4/30) before delivering career performance at SWAC Championships. In the latter he would notch three podium finishes, earning individual titles and All-SWAC honors in the javelin (1-of-21, 61.01m) and long jump (1-of-24, 7.45m). Both of those were season-bests and were joined by a 3-of-22 mark in the 110-meter hurdles (14.34, 14.75 Prelim) I Freshman Tyler Pitts (Madison, Ala.) improved his time in the 400-meter hurdles in five straight meets to close the season. Lowered time from 59.95 to 57.35, 56.86, 56.60 and 56.50, the latter coming in the SWAC Championships I
Pitts was not the only one to show consistent improvement, as senior Demetrius Hurry II (Foley, Ala.) bettered his hammer distance three times. Began with a 13-of-32 finish and mark of 42.74-meters at Margaret Simmons before hitting 44.06 at Hilltopper Relays and 44.34 at Music City.
 
WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Competed in six meets during season and faced off against teams such as Auburn, Vanderbilt, Alabama-Birmingham and Samford I Junior Shanique Masters (St. Catherine, Jamaica) had an impressive showing at the Margaret Simmons Invitational (3/26), placing 3-of-35 in the 400-meters, and stopping the clock at 58.76. One week later she would finish 11-of-49 in the 800-meters at the Hilltopper Relays (4/4) with a time of 2:23.55.
 
SOFTBALL: Took season series at rival Alabama State, earning 12-7 win in opener on April 1 before bludgeoning Hornets 11-1 in five innings on April 2 I Swept regular season ending four-game series with Mississippi Valley State with wins of 3-1, 13-2 (5 inn.), 7-1 and 5-4 from April 29-30. Sweep kept team in contention for SWAC Tournament and was the first of its kind in 17 years. The four-game sweep was the first since 2006 against Texas Southern and the sixth overall since 2004. It was also the first four-game set since one against Southeastern Louisiana in 2016 and part of five wins in last six games to close the season I Freshman outfielder Allyson Riches (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore second baseman Lauryn Gross (Huntsville, Ala.) each earned All-SWAC First-Team honors I Gross became just the second individual on record in the program's NCAA Division I history to earn All-SWAC primarily as a second baseman. She is the first since Tamia Barbadillo in 2018, who earned Second-Team that year, making Gross the first First-Team selection at the position (although records are incomplete from 2000-02) I Riches became just the fifth individual to earn All-SWAC honors as an outfielder, the first since 2016 (Imani Largin) and only the second player ever to do so on the First-Team. With the latter, she joins four-time All-SWAC outfielder, and two-time SWAC Player of the Year, Re'Quincia Mack (2006-09) as the only other individual to accomplish the feat I Senior pitcher Alyssa Lopez (San Leandro, Calif.) delivered the most impressive game of her career at Florida A&M (4/16), throwing all 10.2 innings in an 11-inning game. Was the program's longest in at least 12 years, and one in which she walked just one batter and allowed only a pair of doubles among five hits I The two All-SWAC selections mark four straight seasons the program has had multiple honorees and six at least one selection in six of the past seven campaigns.
 
BASEBALL: Had key performances against non-conference members including an 11-9 victory against C-USA member Alabama-Birmingham (3/5) and an 8-2 win over ASUN team North Alabama (5/10) I Delivered upset victories against Florida A&M (4/23) with a 6-5 score before capturing the series against 2021 SWAC Tournament Champion Jackson State (3/25) with an 8-3 and 15-9 wins I They would then go on to sweep Mississippi Valley State from May 7-8 notching 5-4, 5-0 and 10-5 victories I A&M then upended Bethune-Cookman (5/14) with a 5-4 decision before shocking future tournament champion and rival Alabama State (5/21) with a 10-7 win to end the season on Senior Day I Graduate right fielder Tim Dixon (Debary, Fla.) earned All-SWAC Second-Team after delivering a strong season by starting all 49 games and finishing with 34 runs, six home runs, 11 doubles, four triples and 32 RBIs I All-Conference honor was program's first since 2019 I Junior catcher Jared Tribett (Lumberton, Miss.) sealed his 2022 campaign with a whopping 10 home runs which placed him third in the league and was also named SWAC Hitter of the Week on March 30. That same day junior pitcher Jose Figueroa (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) was named Pitcher of the Week I Senior pitcher Josue Torres (Cidra, Puerto Rico) was named Pitcher of the Week on May 11 I Junior outfielder Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) was crucial in A&M taking the series against Jackson State by going 2-for-3 while adding two runs for the 8-3 victory on the first day. He was then 3-of-4 while scoring four runs to seal the 15-9 win on the final day.
