Story No. 5: Women's Track & Field Brings Home Championships and Numerous Honors
Alabama A&M women's track & field excelled throughout both the indoor and outdoor campaigns, racking up championships, annual and weekly honors and an NCAA East Preliminaries berth
over the course of 12 meets.
Following
a four indoor meet regular season, the Bulldogs would shine at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships, despite them being
delayed nearly a week due to inclement weather.
Undeterred, they came away with
five All-SWAC honors on Day 1 before picking up two more on the final day. Senior
Danice Loney (Melbourne, Fla.) would anchor that performance as she
delivered an individual championship in the pole vault and fellow senior
Sabria Wooten (Dallas, Ga.) claimed her third All-Conference honor of the weekend.
The regular season would also see
a sweep of the SWAC weekly awards by Loney and freshman
Kaan Oliver (Pike Road, Ala.) on January 28 while
Loney would go back-to-back the following week.
That would be a precursor to an outdoor season that would see five more SWAC honors with four by senior
Akia Slaughter (Smyrna, Ga.) on
March 30,
April 4,
April 27 and
May 4 with the first of those being a sweep with Loney.
As impressive as their performance was at the indoor championships, A&M would deliver a dominant outing at the 2021 SWAC Outdoor Championships. They would come away with a whopping
11 All-Conference honors, headlined by a second straight pole vault title by Loney behind a league-record effort.
With the exemplary season she had produced to that point, Slaughter was not done as she
became only the second Bulldog to earn a trip to the NCAA Division I East Preliminaries since at least 2010. She would earn that trip to Jacksonville, Florida with
qualifying marks in both the 100- and 200-meters.
All tolled, Alabama A&M women's track & field delivered a 2020-21 season that saw them compile 18 All-SWAC honorees, eight weekly award winners and an individual NCAA postseason appearance to rank in the top five moments of this year's countdown.
